The Hope Initiative for CMV

How is CMV Spread?

CMV is transmitted through close contact with bodily fluids - particularly saliva and urine - from young children, who are one of the most common sources of transmission for pregnant people.

You don't need to avoid children altogether. Small, consistent hygiene habits make a meaningful difference.

Four Simple Steps

  • Wash your hands after changing nappies, wiping noses, or handling anything a young child has put in their mouth
  • Don't share food or drinks - avoid sharing spoons, cups, or food directly with young children
  • Avoid kissing young children on the mouth or near the face during pregnancy
  • Clean surfaces that young children frequently touch, such as highchair trays and toys

Talk to Your Midwife or GP

These hygiene measures are simple but they only work if people know about them. Ask your healthcare provider about CMV at your next appointment - and share this information with other expectant parents in your life.
